How we are…
The Lazy Duck is a place of retreat, relaxation and recovery. If that’s what your body and soul need, you’ve found it. Just be here.
We also share time and place with a local and a global community, and so at the Lazy Duck we gently invite awareness, connection and engagement.
Some really significant land recovery programmes happen around us, such as Cairngorms Connect and Trees for Life. Do reach out to them to learn more.
From your doorstep, see how we are getting on rewilding the meadow, and maybe you’ll spot the otter and heron we’ve invited back to fish the watercourse.
We try to tread lightly, with careful selection of the things we provide, natural composting loos and, of course, committed recycling.
We love our off-grid vibe, but now that the Scottish grid is overwhelmingly wind-powered, woodstoves are no longer the sole source of heat. You can have a fire when you fancy it, but you won’t have to keep it lit to stay warm. Really clean air is special.
If you come in an electric car, bring your 3-pin charger and you’re most welcome to fill up for free. E-bikes too of course.
We are part of a diversifying rural economy, and good people do interesting things from our co-working space. You can join them if you have work to do.
Some really special practitioners come here to use the Well Being Studio - see what’s on when you get here. Pop in and see what Lucka’s up to with her flower enterprise in the polytunnel.
Finally, this place is also a family home for Roger and his kids. You’ll see us around, and we are delighted to have you with us.
From David and Valery - Lazy Duck Originals
We arrived at Badanfhuarain as newlyweds in April 1974, making our first home in Travellers Cottage. Fifty years on, our grandchildren are fifth-generation Nethy folk.
After careers in education, we began opening our woodland retreat - now The Lazy Duck - in 1999. Guided by guest needs and a wish to live gently, we planted trees, adopted sustainable practices, and honoured those who came before us.
Visitors come for romance, adventure, and reflection. Artists, birdwatchers, and environmentalists alike find peace here. From the beginning, we believed this place was meant to be shared - and that’s what we’re trying to do.
